Have you ever read something that made you smile and think to yourself…
“Yup – that’s me to a T”?
It’s happened to me too…
You know what I’m talking about don’t you?
All too often I can relate with the message myself and other times I catch myself picturing someone else and how the message relates to them.
Typically I review oodles of quotes daily, looking for passages to share socially.
And today was no different in that respect.
Oddly though, one of the quotes that I stumbled upon today (which I know I’ve read many times before) made me stop dead in my tracks of quote surfing… and I thought to myself – REALLY?
“A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.” ~ Coco Chanel
The more I thought about it, the bigger my smile got – and reading the quote over again (while nodding in agreement) made me realize that this happened to me… just this past summer.
It was in early July when I went in for a colour touchup and a cut – I wanted a fresh look for our upcoming trip to Italy. With the colouring & high-lites done, my stylist Charlotte asked me what I was looking for in a cut that day. The conversation went something like this – {it’s not exactly what was said word for word – but you’ll get the gist}…
Me: I’d like it freshened up please. A new style would be nice, but it has to be easy to maintain. I’m going on holidays next week and I don’t want to have to fuss with it, so it has to be really easy to manage.
Charlotte: You know what I’d really like to do?
Me: NO – What?
Charlotte: I’d love to cut your hair short.
Me: (Gasp ) Uh… (Chuckle)… That will never happen (note – in all of my 26 years of knowing my husband – he’s never seen me with short hair – he loves long hair!)
Charlotte: Let me show you what I’m thinking – but your’s wouldn’t be that short (smirk). It’s this style (as she passes me the book).
Me: ahh – no I don’t think so – that’s way too short (meanwhile my daughter Kasandra is listening as the conversation unfolds – she showed up part way thru my appointment)
Kasandra: let me see (nodding to Charlotte as she looks at the pic) oooh Mom you should so do it (huge smile).
Charlotte: Well Lorie, even your daughter says you should go for it – what do you say?
Me: (My head is saying no – yet there’s a pull in my gut that says… you know you wanna – just do it) OK as long as it’s not as short as that picture – I’m in (I’m sure there was more back and forth before I finally agreed though)!
Charlotte: YES!!! (with a huge smile of satisfaction on her face, she passes a wink over to Kasandra – picks up her scissors and the cutting began).
There’s more to the story, of course…
But you’re probably wondering by now how my haircut changed my life!
Truth be told I couldn’t watch…
I had my eyes closed the entire time from just after the first snip (when I felt the scissors skim the nape of my neck and I saw my long hair fall to the floor… my heart was racing). But during that time (with my eyes closed) I felt excitement and adventure, and as my hair continued to fall to the floor, I started to feel lighter – not just on my head – but in my head too, and in my heart, in my spirit and overall in myself. It was scary – yet invigorating and empowering all at once.
When I finally opened my eyes, I was amazed at what I saw – I nearly cried I was so shocked. My daughter recorded my reaction and played it back for me later… wowzers!
Although I was the exact same person – I truly felt like a new person. It took a while to get used to (for so many reasons), and I wasn’t the only one shocked either…
Fast forward to how my haircut changed my life…
- I smile more
- I laugh more
- I live more
- I have more confidence in myself
- I enjoy having my picture taken (that wasn’t the case before)
- I like who I see when I look in the mirror & I feel good about myself
- I’m more adventurous
- I love life more
- I still have fears… but I’m overcoming those too, by making more changes & taking more chances!
I know it sounds crazy – but it’s true…

It happened to me – has it happened to you too?
